Who regulates contractors in Virginia
The Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation administers the Board for Contractors, which licenses contractors operating in the Commonwealth. Licence requirements, classes and monetary thresholds are set in Virginia law and board regulation.

What a licence tells you
A current licence indicates the contractor met the board's requirements at issuance and remains in good standing. It does not certify workmanship quality, guarantee insurance is in force today, or confirm that the company serves your area.

- Current general liability and workers' compensation certificates

Complaints about licensed contractors can be directed to DPOR. Consumer protection concerns, including deceptive practices, can be raised with the Office of the Attorney General.
