How to Document Roof Storm Damage in Virginia

Safety first

Do not climb a wet, damaged or steep roof. Most useful documentation can be captured from the ground, from a window, or from inside the attic.

What to capture, before any repairs

Photograph everything before tarping or cleanup changes the evidence.

• Wide shots of each elevation of the house
• Close shots of missing, creased or displaced shingles
• Dents on gutters, downspouts, vents and flashing
• Debris on the ground, including shingles and tree limbs
• Interior stains, drips and damaged contents
• Attic views showing daylight or wet sheathing
• Date and time on every photo

Confirm the weather event

Note the date and approximate time of the storm. The NOAA Storm Events Database and National Weather Service records can help establish that wind or hail occurred in your area.

Keep a claim log

Record every call and email: date, who you spoke to, what was said, and any reference number. Keep receipts for emergency mitigation such as tarping.
