Snow and ice are a routine concern in the Shenandoah Valley, Southwest Virginia, the Blue Ridge and northern Virginia, and an occasional one elsewhere in the Commonwealth.
Ice dams are an insulation problem
Ice dams form when attic heat melts snow that then refreezes at the cold eave. Persistent icicles at gutters usually indicate heat loss. The durable fixes are air sealing, insulation and balanced ventilation.
Snow load
Wet snow is heavy, and drifting can concentrate load on low-slope sections and against walls. If you are concerned about structural load, consult a qualified professional rather than climbing up.
Winter safety
Do not climb an icy roof. Roof rakes used from the ground can remove snow from the lower courses. Never use an open flame or a metal tool to chip ice.
