The trade is upfront cost against service life
Standing seam metal costs substantially more to install than architectural asphalt shingles and lasts substantially longer. Whether that is a good trade depends almost entirely on how long you intend to own the house.
If you expect to move within a few years, the shorter payback rarely favours metal. If this is a long-term home, metal usually wins over a thirty-year horizon, because you avoid a second full replacement.
Where each material suits Virginia conditions
In coastal Hampton Roads, metal handles wind well but panel and fastener metallurgy matters, because salt air attacks the wrong specification quickly. Ask for a coastal-rated finish and compatible fasteners.
In the Blue Ridge and Shenandoah, metal sheds snow well, which is an advantage on the roof and something to plan around over doorways and walkways. Asphalt performs perfectly well in both settings when it is installed and ventilated correctly.
- Metal: longest service life, best snow shedding, highest upfront cost
- Metal: needs correct coastal specification near salt air
- Asphalt: lowest upfront cost, widest installer availability, easiest repairs
- Asphalt: service life depends heavily on attic ventilation
The objections that come up most
Noise is the usual worry about metal. Over solid decking with underlayment it is much quieter than the barn roof people picture, though not silent in heavy rain.
Denting is the other. Hail can dent softer metal panels cosmetically without affecting performance, and many policies specifically exclude cosmetic damage on metal, so read that clause before you choose.
Decide by ownership horizon
Ask one question first: how many more years will you own this house? Then price both options on the same scope, including tear-off, underlayment, flashing and ventilation, and compare cost per year of expected service rather than headline price.
