Virginia is not one climate

A roof on the Eastern Shore faces salt air and sustained coastal wind. A roof in Frederick County faces snow load and hard freeze-thaw cycling. A roof in Richmond faces months of high heat and humidity. Material choice should follow exposure, not fashion.

Asphalt shingle

The most common covering statewide. Widely available, straightforward to repair, and offered in wind-rated and impact-rated versions. Algae-resistant products are commonly specified in shaded, humid neighbourhoods.

Metal

Standing seam and exposed-fastener panel are long-lived and shed snow well, which is valued in the Shenandoah Valley and mountains. Near salt air, metal and fastener selection matters - ask contractors what they specify for coastal exposure.

Slate

Found on historic properties across Richmond, Charlottesville, Alexandria, Lynchburg and Roanoke. Exceptionally long-lived but requires specialist repair skills, and flashing usually fails long before the slate does.

Cedar shake

Used on colonial and traditional homes, particularly around Williamsburg. It needs more maintenance in Virginia's humidity and tree cover than in drier climates.

Low-slope membrane

TPO, EPDM, PVC and modified bitumen cover most commercial roofs and the rear additions of urban rowhouses. Drainage design matters more than membrane brand.
