Spring
Assess what winter did and prepare for storm season.
- Inspect for winter-damaged flashing and lifted shingles
- Clear gutters of winter debris
- Check attic for condensation staining
- Look for hail evidence after spring convective storms
Summer
Heat and humidity are the stressors.
- Check attic temperature and ventilation performance
- Inspect sealants at penetrations, which degrade fastest in UV
- Watch for algae streaking under tree cover
Autumn
Prepare for leaf fall and tropical systems.
- Clear gutters and valleys repeatedly as leaves drop
- Trim overhanging limbs before storm season peaks
- Have any deferred repairs completed before winter
Winter
Focus on ice, snow load and ventilation.
- Watch for ice dams at eaves, particularly in northern and western Virginia
- Check for icicles forming at gutters, which often indicate attic heat loss
- Avoid walking on cold, brittle roofing
- Inspect after any heavy snow or ice event
